Guidelines on Buying a Desktop Computer
In our world today having a computer is almost crucial. So whether it is time to buy a computer for college, get new computers for your company, or buy one for home use there are a few guidelines that you should always follow.
First, determine whether purchasing a new or used desktop is best for you.
Depending on what you need the computer for, a used computer may work for you. One of the benefits of this is that used computers are sold for a cheaper price then if they are purchased new.
The downfall of buying a used computer is that it has a higher chance of it not working properly. Keep this in mind and purchase a used computer from a company or individual that you trust.
Before purchasing a new or used computer from a computer manufacturer, look at what is available and review the below precautions when purchasing a computer.
Ensure that the computer has no physical damage. You can do this by inspecting the ports as well as the inside and the outside of the case.
If you are selling a computer, ensure that the computer’s hard disk drive is erased to help prevent users from looking at your personal data.
Second, be sure that you are getting what you pay for. You can do this by price checking with other stores and being aware of scams.
If you are buying your computer from an individual, determine if there are any lasting warranties that they will transfer to you.
For example, the computer has a standard three year warranty and the user is selling it after one year. Make sure that the warranty is transferable by the computer manufacturer from the previous owner to you. This is a key discovery because many manufacturers will not transfer the computer warranty.
Make sure that the product you pay for is the product that you take home. It has been known that computer companies may say they are selling you an item but then give you something else that is worth less.
For example, some companies will say their computer processors are a specific speed, however, they may actually have a totally different speed of processor in the computer. This unfortunately can be very easy as any user can up a processor making it appear as one speed but in reality being a completely different speed.
Also, be aware of illegal software. It is important to get legal software. When purchasing a computer, ensure it comes with legal software.
Many small computer companies will build or sell computers that may not provide you with legal copies of the software that you want. Verify that the software that came with your computer is on a standard CD and not a burnt CD. Keep in mind that a burnt or home-made CD will generally have a gold or green bottom.
Ensure that if the software requires a license or registration number that it was included with the computer. An example of software that includes these certificates is Microsoft Office and Windows.
Third, determine if you want a Mac or a PC.
This is always going to be a heavily discussed and debated topic, but what it eventually comes down to is personal choice. Both options have good and bad reasoning behind them.
In the next few years it is projected that Mac and PC will be interchangeable on most computers. With modern technology, Mac and PC are becoming more compatible.
Fourth, talk to an associate and determine which features are best for your needs.
As new technology continues to develop so do the features that are available on computers today. With nearly limitless gaming options, programs, printers, scanners, cameras that may go with a computer, and other special features it is likely you will have to make some decisions on what you really need.
As part of this step it is highly recommended that you visit at least a few different stores so that you can get a good rounded understanding of the different features and prices that are available.
Often, these add-ons are more expensive if you get them right on the spot with your computer. So if you want to save some money take the time to do some research first.
Fifth, determine what the policies on return and warranties the company provides.
Ask what warranty is offered by the computer manufacturer? How long does the warranty last? Does the warranty cover both hardware and software issues? It is often recommended that a computer should have at least a one year warranty.
When it comes time to buy a computer take the time to find one that will meet your needs.
